For years, I felt like a hidden gem. I had this unique perspective, this way of seeing things that felt different, but I didn’t always know how to express it. I thought I needed every detail planned, every sentence perfected, and every plot twist mapped out before I could share my work. I thought success was all about perfection.
But as I leaned into my voice, I discovered that the real magic of writing isn’t in a flawless outline or perfect words, it’s in the process itself. Here’s what I’ve learned from that shift:
You don’t need every plot twist to begin. I used to hold back, thinking I needed to see every step. But writing itself is the journey that reveals each chapter as it’s meant to unfold. Once I started, I found the story grew in ways I couldn’t have planned.
Progress beats perfection. My biggest growth moments came from messy drafts and rewrites. Embracing imperfection helped me to see each draft as a step forward, rather than an end goal. That’s where true growth happens.
Community fuels creativity. Writing can feel isolating, but finding a community changes everything. Connecting with others who understood my journey made me feel seen and appreciated. Their support pushed me to lean into my unique voice even more.
Balance writing with rest. Creativity isn’t constant, and it shouldn’t be. Resting, reflecting, and taking breaks allowed my ideas to breathe and made my work stronger in the end.
